The designer of this coin was James Earl Frazer, a sculptor who used as his model for the Buffalo, Black Diamond who was in the Central Park Zoo. For the Head of the Indian, he created a portrait that was a composite of three important Native Americans; Two Moons, a Cheyenne chief, Iron Trail, an Oglala Sioux chief and Big Tree, a Kiowa chief.
