Hessian Andirons
Hessian Soldier Andirons of cast iron with scarce matching fire tools comprising a stand, shovel, poker and tongs, all with original paint decoration, 19-1/2" H. X 10-1/2" W. X 19" D., stand dimensions 29-1/2" H. X 7" X 8-3/4", American, early 20th Century, stamped "M BIBI/2000/Pat. Pen.". These were the best known pattern of early 19th Century cast iron andirons and it is thought that because the real Hessian Soldiers, who fought against the Colonists during the American Revolution, were so disliked that the Americans enjoyed burning them in effigy in their fireplaces.
