Charcoal on board with applied marble dust, also known as a Marble Dust Painting. This was a popular mid 19th century medium used by amature painters, often young women who were inspired by the well known painters of the day. This scene is a highly romantic fantasy typical of early Hudson River School Paintings and like many Sandpaper Paintings this is an actual location along the Hudson River, however romanticized. This example is a rare one as it is signed, dated, titled and the location is identified by the artist. "THE CASTLE OF NATURE" Fort Edward, New York, 1855, Julia Moore. In excellent unrestored condition. Properly framed in a period frame under old glass with archival backing. Painting size 23"x18", Framed size 22-1/4"x27-1/4". ** WE GUARANTEE THE AUTHENTICITY OF OUR MERCHANDISE AS REPRESENTED. MEMBERS OF: THE ANTIQUES COUNCIL, THE VERMONT ANTIQUES DEALERS ASSOCIATION (VADA), THE CAPE COD ANTIQUE DEALERS ASSOCIATION (CCADA). **
