A Rare Eight Piece Painted Cottage Bedroom Set comprising a double Sleigh Bed ( 81" L. overall, 72 1/2" interior length, overall width 57 1/2", inside width 54 1/4", end height 36", side rail height 16' ), Dresser with attached swivel mirror ( 70 1/2" H., 38 1/2" W., 17 1/2" D. ), Commode with lift top ( 31 1/2" H. X 30 1/2' W. X 17 1/2" D. ) , Side Table with drawer and spool turned leg ( 27 1/2" H. X 16 1/2" D. ).The entire set retains its original paint decoration which is in excellent condition. Between roughly 1850 and 1870 these hand painted sets were popular particularly in country homes. They could be purchased already painted and decorated or else with basic background paint over which the purchaser would add their own free hand decoration. A company in Boston named Hennessey was one of those companies. One of their sets, which is very similar to ours for sale, is pictured on page 416 in "The Architecture of Country Houses" by Andrew Jackson Downing, first published in 1850. Washington Irving and Harriet Beecher Stowe both furnished their houses with similar furniture which remains in those now house museums. Complete sets such as these are very rare.
