19th C. Mahogany English Campaign Chest in Two Parts
A light colored solid Mahogany English Campaign Chest, mid to late 19th century, with Mahogany secondary woods and Pine backboards. It retains all of its original brass locks, brass binding, brass keyhole escutcheons and removable wooden knobs to allow for transport without damaging the knobs. The period lift handles are cast iron, and the Mahogany feet are replacements. 43 3/4" High, 18 1/4" Deep, 36" Wide. The chest is in very good condition with minor imperfections and cabinet repairs. The finish is in very good condition. This chest exemplifies practical portability which was its primary purpose. Used by British military officers, wealthy individuals on safari and London flat owners short on space, these chests were produced from the Late 18th Century through the Early part of the 20th Century. They were made in England, India and East Asia for use around the globe. Still practical, these chests are in demand today.
