An original pair of cast iron owl form andirons with glass eyes. The eyes are translucent allowing the firelight to shine through and make the eyes glow. This particular pair is marked Rostand, the name of one of several foundries that cast this type of andiron at the beginning of the 20th Century. An original pair of cast iron andirons marked with a patent date of 1886, they were made by the Peck, Stow and Wilcox foundry of Connecticut. This foundry was among those making the best castings of this type. The glass eyes are translucent allowing the light from the fire to make the eyes glow.
