Chinese Pith Paintings

A rare set of ten original watercolor paintings on pith (often mistakenly referred to as rice paper), Pith comes from the central column of a spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree, Tetra Panax Papyifera, native to South-West China. It is cut by hand with a small, delicate knife into thin sheets of small size. The size is limited by the nature of the material and the process requires a highly skilled hand. An original chromolithograph by the Louis Prang Co. of Boston, the most famous chromolithographers of the period, titled "Dessert #4" after an original and still extant oil on canvas still life by prolific American still life painter C.P. Ream who by the turn of the 20th Century was widely regarded as the "king of the fruit painters" and it is dated 1870. Miniature Portraits

19th Century French miniature portraits, one of an elaborately dressed lady in Elizabethan costume and the other of a Lady in 19th Century costume, both painted on ivory, in their original gilded bronze frames (the gilding is mostly worn off, but the filigree work is exceptionally fine and in perfect condition), the frames have their original backing (the paintings have not been examined out of their frames) and both frames have their original ring for hanging.
